Bio and Background

I wasn’t diagnosed with ADD until I was in my 40’s.  As an adolescent I coped by organizing myself and taking self-improvement classes (speaking, studying, speed-reading).  I flunked out of college — then got back in and graduated on schedule.  I tried five different jobs in as many years, trying to find my passion.  Friends noticed my strengths and suggested I open a business helping people get organized.

More than 10 years later, the field of professional organizing  was officially born with the formation of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO — now the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals).  I was involved with NAPO (and later ICD: The Institute for Challenging Disorganization) from their beginnings and continue in various leadership positions through the  years and still (serving on the board, developing and providing training, researching the newly identified phenomenon of adult ADD, leading community service programs, editing the newsletter, etc.).  While immersed in this work I wrote my book on strengths-based functioning for organizers, coaches and people who live with ADD: The Processing Modalities Guide (for Those Who Want to Live with More Ease and Less Frustration).

In the 1990’s I began looking for something … some additional skills that would help the most challenged of my clients stay organized.  Eventually I found coaching!  I graduated from the Optimal Functioning Institute’s ADD coach training program in 1995.  I pursued additional coach training and earned my Master Certified Coach credential from ICF in 1997.  I was quite active in three different industries and their primary associations for many years: organizing, ADHD, and coaching — attending all and often presenting on the intersection of these fields at their annual conferences.

From the beginning of my coach training, I was eager to share the power of the coaching process with other organizers — and did.  In 2007 I teamed up with Cameron Gott to create the Coach Approach for Organizers coach training program, which focused on classic coaching skills, ADHD coaching and the synergy of coaching with organizing and productivity consulting.  This has grown over the years into a basic skills course and full foundation coach training program for organizers — as well as an advanced training program of unique and intensive courses for our graduates and for coaches trained elsewhere.  Our full program in accredited by the International Coach Federation.

Through our  Institute for Applied Coaching, we offer five coaching credentials recognizing the synergy of coaching and organizing/productivity client work. These credentials recognize various applications of these two fields — for example, the ADD Organizer Coach, the Organizer Life Coach and the Productivity Leadership Coach.

While being active in my industries and building the coach training and credentialing program, I have continued to work with clients by phone offering mentor and ADHD coaching services.  I have also continued to learn more and more about my own ADD, navigating home building and land ownership; peri- and full-on menopause; marriage, care-taking and widowhood; grand-children, gardening and always, active citizenship!
