Description

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by intrusive, distressing thoughts and behavioral rituals meant to neutralize the anxiety. Interestingly, 20-30% of people with OCD also have ADHD. Although OCD and ADHD traits appear opposite of each other, there are actually more similarities than one might think. Often ADHD is undiagnosed and symptoms are not adequately addressed and treated in OCD patients, which can significantly affect treatment. This presentation will review the scientific literature on this understudied comorbidity, a practical understanding of the ADHD and OCD brain, as well as how OCD+ADHD can clinically present. Treatment recommendations when someone is affected by OCD+ADHD will be reviewed. Clinical and personal anecdotes will be presented.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will be able to understand how ADHD presents with OCD
  • Attendees will learn the importance of diagnosing ADHD and OCD and how lack of identification can create treatment obstacles for patients
  • Attendees will become familiar with treatment strategies and recommendations for those with OCD and ADHD
