First Steps
If you are unsure how to handle the situation, contact your committee chair or supervisor for help or advice. They will put you in touch with the appropriate mediation team. This will remain an informal conversation until and unless further actions are required.
It is understandable that when we have a complaint there are many reasons that keep us from addressing the problems directly. ADHD, fear of retaliation, and rejection sensitivity do not always help in these matters and it is great to keep in mind ADDA is made of other ADHD adult like yourself. Most of the time we don’t address situations head on because we do not have the skills or knowledge in how to complete the processes therefore, we often will not address problems.
Below you will find some problem solving and resolution tips you can use prior to taking things to the next level in the Complaint process.
Problem Solving/Resolution Steps
We encourage members to try to resolve concerns with the person(s) involved wherever possible.
2. Use “I“ statements rather than “you” statements. (Some examples here may be useful)
3. Outline the facts (objective observations) of your concerns.
4. Identify your desired outcome. What would you like them to do differently?
5. Take ownership of the part that you played within the situation, and reflect on how you will do things differently in the future?
6. Recognize that it may take more than one interaction to resolve the situation.
7. Focus on the problem, not the person(s).
8. Listen and clarify/confirm your understanding of what they are saying.
9. Be respectful. Refrain from judgement, blame and disparaging comments.
10. Should things get heated, take a break. Continue the conversation when all parties can listen and respond to each other.
