Various medications are the treatment of choice for ADHD at all points in the life cycle. And yet they have been called “The powerful tools that everyone loves to fear.” There is no area of medicine in which there has been less clinician training and more intentional disinformation over the years than about ADHD. This first part of the presentation examines why we take medications in the first place and why in many cases there are no substitutes. It critically examines the need for the combination of medication with non-pharmacologic treatments in order to get optimal outcomes. The conclusion of Part 1 will examine the available medications, how they work and what we can rationally expect them to do.
