“Together We Can… Together We Will”
The biggest ADHD conference of the year is now even better. Last year, ADDA joined CHADD and this year we welcome the ADHD Coaches Organization (ACO) into an even bigger and better conference that has something for everyone. We are looking forward to welcoming you to the 2018 Annual International Conference on ADHD. Our theme of “Together we can…Together we will” represents the coming together of these three organizations and the coming together of the more than 1,000 attendees who bring their wisdom, questions, stories, laughs, and tears for an experience like no other.
Aristotle once said, “The whole is more than the sum of its parts”. We have the chance to experience the expertise, cultures, and energy of three dedicated ADHD organizations. It’s an exciting time to gather together in St. Louis. This conference will bring together adults, parents, adolescents, educators, coaches, clinicians and other professionals from around the country (and the world) to connect, learn and collaborate. For four days, we will have the opportunity to learn alongside the experts in ADHD—and from each other.
Together we can develop new and improved programming… Together we will start the conference with the ADHD Professional Institute on Thursday. This day of learning is for professionals—psychologists, social workers, ADHD coaches, counselors, therapists, educators, physicians, nurses, and speech pathologists—who provide services to individuals with ADHD. This day will be jam packed with opportunities to learn. There will be 30 one- hour sessions and 6 three-hour sessions, with most providing continuing education credits.
Together we can provide an incredible variety of ways to connect, learn and collaborate… Together we will open up the general conference on Thursday afternoon with a reception in the exhibit hall for everyone, followed by our first keynote and then 3 days of non-stop opportunities. There will be general sessions filled with speakers on a wide variety of topics, research symposia, opportunities to connect with friends new and old, new peer support meet-ups, a film screening, a talent show, time for physical activity, coach speed-dating… If you have loved this conference before, you will love it even more with the additions that we have made.
In 1904, the world looked to St. Louis for its grand international exposition that became known as the St. Louis World’s Fair. The Fair brought together people, displays and publications from all over the country and the world. All eyes were on the city as they showcased new knowledge, cutting edge technologies, and innovative ideas of the time. It is our hope that in 2018, eyes around the world will once again be on St. Louis as we showcase the knowledge, cutting edge research and innovative ideas surrounding ADHD with easy access to all.
Together we can…Together we will gather in St. Louis to connect, learn and collaborate!
It Worked For These People, and It Will Work For You
You know how powerful attending the Conference was for us… And it’s not just us.
A Note From ADDA’s President
Hello and welcome! My name is Duane Gordon. I’m an adult with ADHD, and the President of the Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA). I’m inviting you to join me in St. Louis, Missouri this November for the 2018 International Conference on ADHD.
As an adult with ADHD, you know the symptoms. You’re inattentive and distractible. You have trouble starting tasks, lack follow through and procrastinate. You struggle to control your emotions and you can’t get organized. You know the consequences of adult ADHD too well… poor job performance, marital difficulties, financial struggles and more (so much more). But the worst thing about adult ADHD is going through it alone. You struggle daily… sometimes you win, more often you suffer setbacks… but always, you do it alone.
What do you do when you’re diagnosed with adult ADHD? Most people ask their doctors, visit their library and search Google. But for most people, none of that works. And what happens if you just do nothing? If you just keep doing what you’ve been doing? Your life slips away. Your dreams and ambitions crumble like a seawall battered by a hurricane. Your self- esteem is damaged; you feel shame and you lose confidence. Your loneliness, and desperation, grows. No one gets you unless they have adult ADHD too. And since we don’t wear “Adult ADHD” uniforms, hats or badges, we’re isolated, alone… We know others face similar challenges. It’s logical. But… logic doesn’t cure loneliness.
How I Found My Tribe and Changed My Life
I attended my first ADHD Conference in 2005 in Tucson, Arizona. I went with Linda, my wife… I was lacking in confidence I never would have attended alone. Like many of you, I learned of my ADHD as an adult. My daughter’s diagnosis happened in school and mine followed as we learned about ADHD. While there was a sense of relief knowing at least there was a reason for my struggles, I hid my ADHD out of shame.
I’d heard about the Conference, but I wasn’t sure… to be honest, I was afraid… Then a good friend, another adult ADHD’er said, “Duane, go to the Conference. It’ll change your life”. She was right. Attending that first Conference was life changing. Surrounded by hundreds of fellow adults with ADHD, I realized I was not alone. I soaked up more information in four
days than I’d learned in months, even years, before the Conference… That was the first step in a transformation that continues today. I was shy, anxious and lonely. Today, I’m ADDA’s president.
There’s more to the story, but I’ll save that for another day. Every journey starts with a single step. For you, as it was for me, attending this Conference might be that step. Finally, I was “home.” This was my tribe. I found people who get me, and a place I could be myself. My wife and I were sitting in the audience as Sari Solden wrapped up her famous “Sheep Shame” keynote. I turned to Linda and said, “From now on, no matter when, no matter where, no matter how much it costs, we’ll be at this ADHD Conference.” Linda agreed. And as Robert Frost would say, “That has made all the difference.”
See you in November! Regards,
Finally, It’s Your Turn
You have a choice to make: Do what you’ve been doing (or worse, do nothing at all). You know where that will lead. Is that where you want to go? Take a new action, and get a new result. You are at the mercy of your ADHD. Until you take charge of your adult ADHD, you can’t take control of your life. Stop stumbling around in the dark. Come to the Conference. field. And connect with hundreds of adults with ADHD like you. Which do you really want for yourself?
