| | President's Message
Dear ADDA Community,
Flow is lovely word--it's even pleasant to say as it rolls out of the mouth into conversation. The field of positive psychology would describe a state of flow as a rewarding experience where "action and awareness merge together into a fluid state." It feels good to be in a state of flow. It feels good to be connected. (*)

| Public Policy Update
Written by Natalie Knochenhauer, Pennsylvania CHADD Public Policy Advocacy Chair, submitted by Bette Sovinee, Contributing Editor
There is an exciting grassroots effort taking hold in Pennsylvania, which is seeking to protect the health insurance of college students with AD/HD. Fueled by the growing public awareness AD/HD does not end in childhood and the energy of a statewide group of CHADD activists committed to bettering the lives of teens and adults with ADHD by influencing public policy, this effort is a first for CHADD.

| Coming Soon: ADDA's 2008 Teleclass Series
ADDA's Teleclasses have been such a hit, ADDA will now be offering classes all year long. Teleclasses will begin in April and run bimonthly on Wednesday nights at 9:00 PM EST through November. In addition, we are expanding some of the Teleclasses from a phone-based program to a Webinar. Now members will not only be able to listen to the Teleclasses via the phone, they will also have the ability to login online, via a link we provide, to chat with other participants and view the slides as the presenter is scrolling through them. Attendees will be able to send their questions to the speaker via the Web and hear them answered live.
Don't have Web access? Don't worry! You can still listen to the Teleclasses via the phone as in the past.
Can't attend Wednesday nights at 9 PM? No problem! We will still post recordings of past Teleclasses in the members' only area for you to listen to at your convenience. The recordings will be improved as the slide presentation will now be synched with the recording. No more guessing about the slides!
Interested in presenting a Teleclass? We would love to hear from you! Send us a message at adda.membership@add.org to find out more.
Teleclasses are still free to members along with access to archived recordings of past Teleclasses. Look for more information on the 2008 Teleclass Series coming soon! | House Passes Mental Health Legislation The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed legislation requiring full parity in health insurance plans. The legislation is known as the "Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act" (HR 1424).

| | The Institute for The Advancement of AD/HD Coaching
By Harold R. Meyer
President Elect, The Institute for the Advancement of AD/HD Coaching/Contributing Editor
The benefits of coaching for AD/HD adults have become widely accepted. However, the qualifications needed to become an AD/HD coach were, until recently, nonexistent. Anyone could decide to "anoint" themselves a coach. Although there are several known organizations for coaches, such as ICF and ACO, they do not offer specific certification in AD/HD coaching.

| Needed or Not
By Dan Pryor, Contributing Editor
The American corporation does not suffer fools gladly. Neither does it suffer those like myself, who have AD/HD. In the world of education, creative, new dispensations are implemented for individuals who think a little too slow, too fast or too differently-more time on exams, alternative ways to write papers and make presentations and even different places to learn what needs to be learned. Teachers are coached, and AD/HD students are coached regarding how to talk to each and brainstorm about ways to approach unique challenges of life in the classroom. There are even laws guaranteeing alternative ways to perform in school because of the special abilities of the AD/HD scholar.

| Workplace Issues By Wilma Fellman, M.Ed., LPC, Contributing Editor Author of Finding A Career That Works For You
Enough with the Weaknesses--Assess Your Strengths!
Some lucky souls seem to find their correct job match at first try. But most of us find "career" to be an evolutionary process. Individuals with AD/HD are often attracted to careers not exactly fitting their whole picture, which requires some re-evaluation, modification, accommodation and the development of new coping strategies. Many with AD/HD are quick to list-- in vivid detail--all of their weakness/challenges in the workplace, but are hard-pressed to describe their strengths. We need to be fair to ourselves by continuously "tallying" strengths needed in the world of work.

| New Data on the Diversion of Prescription Medications Research Studies of Interest to ADDA Members
By Janet Kramer, MD FACP CCHP/Contributing Editor
My expertise, as an internal medicine physician, is not in the treatment of AD/HD but in the treatment of substance abuse withdrawal and in pain management. Consequently, I have developed quite a different perspective on substance abuse from that of the general public. However I share a concern with ADDA colleagues about the co-occurrence of substance abuse and AD/HD, particularly when effective treatment for AD/HD may involve use of controlled medication, such as amphetamine and amphetamine-like medication.

| Male Research Participants Wanted!
Dan Davies, M.A., a graduate student at U.C. Berkley's School Psychology is seeking participants for a research study research relating to new methods of diagnosing and understanding AD/HD symptoms in adults.
My name is Dan Davies, and I am a graduate student at the U.C. Berkeley School of Education. I am conducting a study comparing students with and without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD). You are being invited to participate in this study. Teachers or school administrators do not have any influence over the selection of subjects for this research, so your decision to participate will have no bearing on your grade or academic standing at school.

| Spark: The Revolutionary Science of Exercise and the Brain
By John J. Ratey, M.D. (Little, Brown and Company, 2008)
Reviewed by Gina Pera, Contributing Editor
Yes, we know exercise is vital for physical and mental health. But does this knowledge motivate us into gear? Hand me the remote, and I'll think about it.
Let's face it: Most of us won't move a muscle towards doing anything we're supposed to do until we know two things: why and how?
