(topic not approved for CME)

A workshop for women with AD/HD who work in the field as mental health professionals, doctors, coaches, organizers, or educators.

Description: Even though you have found a way to “focus on your strengths,” you may have paid a price for this success by overworking, ignoring your relationships, or holding yourself back from creating what you want to achieve. Many women in the field do not get the same quality of support or guidance they are giving to others. Explore how to ask for help yourself when you are the one everyone turns to. Begin to form your own personal definition of success as a woman and a professional with ADD and develop criteria to help you choose between many possible directions to pursue. 1. Explore, share, and discover how they have coped with success.

2. Understand how to form criteria for making good decisions professionally and personally in light of their ADD.

Title: Welcome to the ADD Family (this is a free session)
(topic not approved for CME)

Description: This "free" pre-conference session is designed to provide a warm "welcome home" experience for people new to the ADDA community, however all are invited to participate. Those of us who have been connected with the community for many years know first hand of the love and acceptance to be found in ADD-land. Together, we create a culture of forgiveness, where our differences are not only accepted, but celebrated. You are probably saying to yourself "sounds good, but I want to know what, exactly, we are going to be doing in this session." There will be an orientation to the conference itself - what to expect and how to take care of yourself now and when you go home. It is our experience that ADDA conferences are about a lot more than gathering practical information. It is a healing experience to connect with a lot of people like yourself, and powerful emotions often surface. We will explore some of the common issues that come up for conference participants and tell stories from past gatherings. We will also provide an opportunity for you to share your own stories and connect with others in small groups. There will be a narrated slide show of the human side of past conferences. Last, but not least, we will invite you to participate in an initiation ceremony. The ceremony is entitled "Welcome to the ADD Tribe." We will include elements from native American ceremonial tradition, as well as traditions from other native peoples. Humor, of course, will be an important ingredient - we are ADD, after all. Be prepared to learn the password and secret handshake. We intend to have a great time, but the ceremony will not be treated as a joke. The intention is to honor the power of joining an awesome community. This pre-conference is led by members of The ADDed Dimension Coaching Group, the first group ADD coaching practice. The ADDed Dimension Coaching Group offers sensitive and comprehensive services to adults and teens with ADD. Our staff is listed in the bio section, with the exception of Mary Jane Johnson, ACT, PCC, who will be far too busy organizing the conference to add this pre-conference to her plate (www.addcoaching.com).

Objectives: Participants will

1) Learn the art of self-care at an ADDA conference

2) Have the opportunity to connect with others in small groups.

3) Have the opportunity to celebrate the positive aspects of ADD.

Title: Disordered Eating as a Model for the Treatment of ADHD and Addiction

Description: Recent research indicates that undiagnosed ADDults comprise 27-50% of the disordered eating patient population.. The cumulative trauma of undiagnosed ADHD can be fertile soil for addictions. At present, few professionals understand the impact that ADHD can have on the successful treatment of disordered eating. In drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs, it is understood that ADHD must be treated concurrently. This model is a comprehensive 5-step process fundamental to the successful treatment of disordered eating and ADHD clients.

Objectives: Participants will be able to

1. Explain how growing up with undiagnosed or untreated ADHD creates chronic trauma and increases the risk of addiction.

2. Describe how, as with drug and alcohol recovery, ADHD must be treated concurrently in relation to disordered eating systems: dieting, compulsive overeating, binging and purging, and food anorexia.

3. Apply new strategies and techniques to support or transform existing disordered eating programs to successfully meet the needs of ADHD clients.
