Awareness Day Alert
Submitted by Pamela Milazzo, JD, ACG
Chairman, ADDA Awareness Day Committee
ADDA is pleased to announce the second annual “National Attention Deficit Disorder Awareness Day”, to be held on September 14, 2005. The theme for this year’s celebration is Awareness + Education = Empowerment. Americans first celebrated National AD/HD Awareness Day in 2004 following ADDA’s successful efforts to spearhead passage of a U.S. Senate Resolution that recognized AD/HD as a major public health concern. Members of ADDA are currently working with members of the Senate, including Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Dick Durbin (D-IL), who have co-sponsored this year’s Senate Resolution. We anticipate that the U.S. Senate will once again pass the resolution unanimously in the coming days.
ADDA is busy organizing and coordinating numerous events and activities in celebration of the 2005 National Awareness Day. ADDA will offer several educational opportunities that day, including free teleclasses led by the world’s leading experts on AD/HD. We invite corporations, and other healthcare, education and advocacy groups to partner with us in an effort to coordinate National Awareness Day activities. We also encourage local advocacy and support groups, coaches, psychologists and other professionals to sponsor their own Awareness Day events and to provide us with the details of those events. We are happy to advertise both your group and your event on our website, and to provide your group with an Awareness Day Kit containing informational materials that can be shared with your membership, including an Awareness Day Poster, an AD/HD fact sheet, and a list of questions individuals can ask physicians regarding diagnosis and treatment of AD/HD. Individuals interested in sharing their AD/HD stories of empowerment are also encouraged to participate in our “Essay Drive” by submitting a short essay of 200 words or less. Essays will be posted on ADDA’s website and rotated on a regular basis.
The schedule of Awareness Day events and teleclasses, Group Event Information Forms, essay rules, suggestions for how to participate or partner with ADDA, the Awareness Day Kit, and Awareness Day products for sale can all be found on the Awareness Day link on ADDA’s website at www.add.org. Or, for more information, contact the ADDA Office by email at mail@add.org.
